Vietnam - Laos Overland Tour - 22Days/19Nights Visited: Hanoi – Vu Linh – Ba Be – Bao Lac – Dong Van – Ha Giang – Bac Ha – Sapa – Muong Lay – Dien Bien – Muong Khoa – Luong Prabang – Xieng Khoang – Vieng Xay – Cuc Phuong – Hanoi – Halong

 

Day 1: Hanoi Arrival

Met upon your arrival by our guide and driver, transfer to hotel. Free at leisure for the rest of day. Overnight in Hanoi.

 

Day 2: Hanoi – Vulinh ~ 180 km (B/D)

Pick up from your hotel to our office, we will spend 30 minutes for the guide to do briefing about the trip and how to ride in Vietnam also to get used to with the bike before we start our trip to Thac Ba Lake which has an area of 23,400 ha and 1,331 islands and hills with diverse ecological environments. The water in the lake is blue and clear, and imprinted with the reflections of the surrounding ancient forest. On arrival to Vu Linh ethnic village of Dao minority by the side of the lake, it is your time to do leisure walk to explore this beautiful village and people life.

Tonight, the welcome is exceptional with a lot of local rice-wine from the host is surely one of the highlights of the trip. Overnight in homestay.

 

Day 3:  Vu Linh – Ba Be ~ 180 km (B/D)

Today we continue to Babe lake & national park where the landscape is amazing and the homestay is another unique experience. Upon your arrival, you are free at leisure to do the boat trip (own expense) or walk to explore the village of the Tay people. Overnight in homestay of a Tay family.

 

Day 4: Ba Be – Bao Lac ~ 150 km (B)

This morning is free to explore the village by a walking visit or doing boat trip. Continue to Bac Lac with visit to some roadside markets on the way. Overnight in Bac Lac

Day 5: Bao Lac – Dong Van ~ 100 km (B)

After the breakfast, let spend your time to visit a local market in town before riding to Dong Van. The highlight will be the Ma Phi Leng pass, very high but offering great feeling and amzing view. Upon arrival, check in your hotel. Overnight in Dong Van.

 

Day 6: Dong Van – Ha Giang ~ 145 km (B/D)

Morning visit to Dong Van old street and if it falls on Sunday and if it falls on Sunday, you will have great opportunity to visit the weekly maket of Dong Van where gathers many ethnic groups and their local products. The market is like a festival for the local to enjoy the time with friends, talking, drinking...Continue to Ha Giang with stop at the Vuong palace and Heaven Gate in Quan Ba. Overnight in Ha Giang.

 

Day 7: Ha Giang – Bac Ha ~ 200 km (B)

Today’s ride to Bac Ha via Hoang Su Phi and Xin Man on curving road and with great view from the “Winding Pass” over the imposing mountains that dotted with many ethnic villages. The beautiful day will end up in Bac Ha in a hotel.

 

Day 8: Bac Ha – Sapa ~ 120 km (B)

In the morning either visit one of the areas weekly markets .

 

Market days:

Can Cau - Saturdays

Bac Ha or Sundays

Cao Son - Wednesdays.

Coc Ly - Tuesdays

In the late afternoon ride to Sapa. Overnight in Sapa.

 

Day 9: Sapa (B)

Free day at leisure to relax or visit Sapa on own. Overnight in Sapa.

 

Day 10: Sapa – Muong Lay ~ 200 km (B)

After breakfast, we leave Sapa for Muong Lay with visit to “Silver Waterfall”, “ Heaven Gate” and many roadside ethnic villages and markets. We end up this beautiful day in Muong Lay. Overnight in Muong Lay.

Day 11: Muong Lay – Dien Bien ~ 105 km (B)

Moning boat trip to explore Black river and some ethnic villages before our ride to Dien Bien (the decisive battle in the Indochina War). Upon arrival, we visit some historical sites such as Dien Bien Phu Museum, the bunker headquarters of French commander, Colonel Christian de Casties, A1 hill-where bitter fighting took place. Overnight in Dien Bien.

 

Day 12: Dien Bien – Laos (MuongKhoa) ~ 120 km (B)

Today, we cross Tay Trang border to Laos, and head to Muong Khoa, a small lovely town by Nam U river. The ride to Muong Khoa is very difficult on dirt road but interesting and fun. Overnight in Muong Khoa.

 

Day 13: Muong Khoa – Luong Pra Bang ~ 220 km (B)

Lao is a green country, during the day, you will see green hills and mountains, via Uodomxay, the heart of north Laos, we continue to Luong Prabang-the former capital of Laos and listed as the World Cultural Heritage. Overnight in Luong Prabang.

 

Day 14: Luong Pra Bang (B)

Day 15: Luong Pra Bang – Xieng Khoang (The plain of Jars) (B)

A long day of riding up and down the mountains of Laos to Xieng Khoang. Upon arrival, visit the Plain of Jars which is a large group of historic cultural sites in Laos containing thousands of stone jars. This area is very famous during the Vietnam War and Secret War. Today, you can still see many vestiges even at the hotel.

 

Day 16: Xieng Khoang –  Vieng Xay ~ 240 km (B)

Continue the trip to Vieng Xay- The former Pathet Lao (PL) revolutionary headquarters of Vieng Xay sit in a striking valley of fertile hills and limestone cliffs riddled with caves, several of which were used to shelter PL officers during the Second Indochina War. The town is famous for the caves in which the stoic officers and some 23, 000 people found shelter, but Vieng Xai itself is unbearably pretty. Manmade lakes spot the landscape and wildflowers explode in crimson and yellow to join the emerald and karst backdrop. The beauty of the terrain somehow underscores the decimation it suffered during the American bombing campaign. Overnight in Vieng Xay.

Day 17: Vieng Xay – Cuc Phuong National Park ~ 250 km (B)

Beautiful ride on the village road and picturesque mountains to Na Neo border gate, back to Vietnam again, continue to Cuc Phuong National Park. Overnight in Cuc Phuong.

 

Day 18: Cuc Phuong – Hanoi ~ 120 km (B/L)

Morning free to visit Cuc Phuong national park by your bike, you can also do a short trek. Ride back to Hanoi. Overnight in Hanoi.

 

Day 19: Hanoi 

Free day at leisure for spending your own time to visit Hanoi.

 

Day 20: Hanoi – Halong ~ 165 km by car  (B/L/D)

Morning drive to Halong Bay (165km), Vietnam most scenic sight, a recognized World Natural Heritage Site. Upon arrival, board your deluxe traditional wooden junk. Welcome drink on board. After a relaxing break, enjoy a delicious seafood lunch while cruising through the wonderful Ha Long bay visiting its amazing grottoes and caves. Opportunity to dive off the boat and have a pleasant swimming in the deep blue water of East Sea before relaxing on your sun deck to view a Halong sunset.  Dinner on board with excellent fresh seafood.

Overnight on board.

 

Day 21: Halong – Hanoi  (B/L)

Get up early to catch the sunrise on the bay and relax with a cup of hot coffee or tea. We depart for a visit to the splendid Sung Sot grotto and a quick glimpse of a nearby fishing village. Enjoy another seafood lunch on board while cruising back through Halong bay to the pier. Transfer to Hanoi for overnight.

 

Day 22: Hanoi Departure (B)

Free at leisure and check out at noon. Transfer to the airport for your flight home.
